Temi Tea Garden,Sikkim
Temi Tea Garden is the only large-scale tea estate in Sikkim and a flagship agricultural enterprise in the state. Established in the late 1960s to develop commercial tea cultivation, Temi produces high-quality orthodox teas that have put Sikkim on the map for specialty Himalayan teas. The garden occupies rolling slopes in the lower Himalaya, contributing to local livelihoods, sustainable agriculture, and scenic biodiversity around Namchi in South Sikkim.
Places to visit
- Expansive tea terraces — neatly manicured rows of tea bushes across the hillside.
- Tea processing factory — where orthodox tea is processed (sometimes open for tours by arrangement).
- Tea tasting & estate shop — buy fresh Temi-branded teas and sample varieties.
- Panoramic viewpoints — views over the valleys and occasional glimpses of the greater Himalayan range (clear days offer the best vistas).

Best Time to Visit
March to October. Peak experience: March–June for active plucking and vibrant tea bushes; October–November for clear skies and good views. The monsoon (mid-June to September) brings heavy rain and mist which can limit views and walking.
Weather Conditions
Temperate Himalayan foothill climate — cool and fresh. Daytime temperatures commonly range from 10°C to 25°C depending on season; mornings and evenings can be chilly. Heavy rains in monsoon months.
Entry Fees & Permits
There is no general public entry fee for the garden itself. The tea factory and guided tours may operate during typical working hours (daytime) and often require prior permission or appointment—check locally or contact the estate shop. Fresh tea is available for purchase on-site.
Accessibility
Temi Tea Garden is accessible by road from towns in South Sikkim. Nearest major town: Namchi (short drive) — use Namchi as a local hub. Nearest airport/railhead: Bagdogra airport / New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri) are the main gateways; from there hire a pre-booked taxi or take road transport to South Sikkim. Roads are hilly; allow several hours from the plains. Local buses and shared taxis operate between Namchi and surrounding villages—taxis from Namchi are the easiest option to reach the estate.
Recommended Duration
A half-day to full-day visit is sufficient to see the gardens, visit the factory/shop, taste tea and walk the terraces. Combine with a stay in Namchi or nearby Ravangla for a 1–2 day itinerary to explore monasteries and viewpoints.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Bring layered clothing (mornings/evenings can be chilly), a waterproof jacket in the monsoon, sturdy walking shoes, a sunhat and sunscreen for sunny periods, and binoculars if you plan to birdwatch.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Buy Temi-branded tea (orthodox black tea, seasonal flushes and blends) as the primary souvenir. Other local items include small tea tins, packaged fresh leaves, and Sikkim handicrafts. Try local food in nearby towns: momos, thukpa, local honey and sel roti/rice-based snacks. Packaged Sikkim spices, jams and preserves also make good gifts.
