Best Time to Visit

Best time: Late March to June and September to mid-November. These months offer clearer skies, stable roads, and the best visibility. Winter months (December–February) are generally inaccessible due to heavy snow.

Weather Conditions

Weather: High-altitude alpine climate—cold year-round. Daytime temperatures in the recommended season range from about 5°C to 15°C; nights can drop below freezing. Sudden weather changes are common; expect wind, sun glare, and occasional snow even in shoulder months.

Accessibility

Access: Nearest major transport hubs: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) / New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway. From Gangtok, reach North Sikkim via Mangan and Chungthang; Lachen is the usual base. Thangu lies beyond Lachen on the road to Gurudongmar (approx. 30–60 minutes from Lachen by road, depending on conditions). Roads are mountainous and can be rough; high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Expect limited mobile connectivity and no ATMs—carry cash and essentials.

Recommended Duration

Recommended stay: 1–2 nights in Thangu for acclimatization and exploration; allow additional 1 day if visiting Gurudongmar Lake. Combine with stays in Lachen and/or Lachung for smoother acclimatization.
