Saklıkent Gorge,Turkey

Saklıkent Gorge is one of Turkey's deepest and longest gorges, carved by millennia of water erosion in the Taurus Mountains. It is an important natural landmark in southwestern Turkey, showcasing dramatic karst landscapes, steep limestone walls, and a dynamic river system. The gorge highlights the region's geological history and contributes to local biodiversity by providing unique microhabitats. It is also a popular recreational and eco-tourism destination near Antalya and Fethiye, playing a role in local tourism economies.

Places to visit

  • The narrow, towering limestone canyon walls
  • The icy-cold river and rushing rapids running through the gorge
  • Wooden walkways and suspended bridges over the river
  • The entrance park with cafes, picnic spots and local craft stalls
  • Nearby Saklıkent National Park trails and picnic areas

Unique Aspects

  • A 300-meter section of the gorge reachable on foot with walls up to 300-400 meters high
  • Short day-hike routes and wading opportunities through shallow, cool water
  • Possibility to continue into more remote, deeper canyon sections for experienced hikers
  • Karst formations, caves, and seasonal waterfalls
  • Microclimate offering respite from coastal heat—temperatures inside can be significantly cooler

Things to do

  • Walking and hiking along wooden platforms through the gorge
  • Wading and cooling off in the icy river (waterproof footwear recommended)
  • Picnicking and relaxing at the entrance park and designated areas
  • Short canyoning and guided trekking into deeper sections for experienced visitors
  • Photography of dramatic rock faces, river scenes and local flora

Best Time to Visit

Late spring to early autumn (May to October) for comfortable weather and full access; summer offers the warmest conditions but expect crowds. For cooler temperatures and fewer visitors, visit in shoulder seasons (April, October).

Weather Conditions

Mountain-influenced Mediterranean climate: hot and dry on nearby coast, but the gorge remains cool with icy river water. Temperatures inside the canyon can be 10–15°C cooler than outside on hot days.

Accessibility

Saklıkent is about 50–60 km from Fethiye and roughly 200 km from Antalya (approx. 1–1.5 hours from Fethiye, 2.5–3 hours from Antalya by car). Accessible by car, tourist minibuses (dolmuş) and organized tours from nearby resorts. The main entrance has wooden walkways but parts of the gorge involve uneven surfaces and shallow river wading—limited wheelchair accessibility beyond the entrance area.

Recommended Duration

Half-day to full-day visit (2–6 hours). Combine with nearby attractions like Tlos, Xanthos or Patara for a full-day excursion.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Sturdy, non-slip waterproof sandals or closed shoes you can get wet, quick-dry clothing, light layers, a small daypack, walking stick for balance, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a waterproof bag for electronics. For deeper canyon treks, consider neoprene socks or trekking sandals and a helmet if guided canyoning.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Entrance-park cafés serve local snacks, tea and simple meals—try gözleme (Turkish flatbread/pastry) and ayran (yogurt drink). Nearby towns offer seafood, Mediterranean cuisine and regional specialties. Souvenir stalls may sell local handicrafts, woven goods, and hiking accessories.
