Con Dao Prison,Vietnam
Côn Đảo Prison (often called Côn Sơn Prison) is one of Vietnam's most important historical sites. Built during the French colonial period and later used by successive regimes, it imprisoned thousands of Vietnamese political prisoners, revolutionaries and independence activists. The site—including the notorious "tiger cages" (Chuồng Cọp)—became an international symbol of political imprisonment and human-rights abuses. Today it is a national memorial and museum that documents Vietnam's struggle for independence and pays tribute to the martyrs who suffered and died there.

Weather Conditions
Tropical maritime climate: hot and humid year-round, average temperatures around 25–32°C (77–90°F). Expect sudden showers in the wet season and strong sun in the dry season.
Entry Fees & Permits
There is usually a small entrance fee to the prison/museum complex and specific sections (e.g., tiger cages). Typical opening hours are roughly 07:30–16:30, but fees and hours can change—check locally or with your tour operator before visiting.
Accessibility
Côn Đảo is reached by flight to Côn Sơn Airport (VCS) from Ho Chi Minh City (short domestic flights) or by ferry from Vũng Tàu (duration varies by service). The prison site lies on Côn Sơn island near the main town and is reachable by short taxi ride or on foot from many hotels. Note: the historic structures have uneven floors, stairs and narrow passages, so wheelchair access is limited.
Recommended Duration
Plan 1–3 hours for the prison complex and museum. To include other island attractions (beaches, viewpoints, snorkeling) allow a full day or 2–3 days on Côn Đảo.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Wear modest, respectful clothing for a memorial site, plus comfortable walking shoes. Bring sun protection (hat, sunscreen), a refillable water bottle, and a light rain jacket in the wet season.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Sample fresh seafood and local island dishes; try local coffee and snacks. Souvenirs include local handicrafts, postcards, books about Côn Đảo history, and marine-themed items such as Con Dao pearls and shells (respect conservation rules).
