Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park,Vietnam

UNESCO World Heritage Site (2003) — Phong Nha–Ke Bang is internationally recognized for its outstanding karst landscape and some of the world's most significant cave systems, including Son Doong (the largest known cave passage by volume). The park preserves an ancient karst plateau (one of the oldest in Asia), extensive subterranean rivers, complex cave morphology, and rich tropical rainforest supporting high biodiversity and many endemic or rare species.

Places to visit

  • Phong Nha Cave (boat trip through an impressive river cave with large inner chambers)
  • Son Doong Cave (world's largest cave; access by guided expedition only)
  • Paradise Cave (Thien Duong) (long, dry cave with massive stalactites and a lit walkway)
  • Hang En (huge dry cave with a beach and popular for multi-day trekking/camp adventures)
  • Dark Cave (Hang Toi) (swimming, mud baths, zipline and cave exploration)
  • Botanical and wildlife zones (tropical rainforest, karst slopes, endemic flora and fauna)
  • Son River and Phong Nha village (scenic river rides, local culture and homestays)

Unique Aspects

  • Large cave chambers that host their own microclimates and ecosystems
  • High biodiversity: primates, bats, birds, and many endemic plant species
  • Remnants of wartime history and traditional rural Vietnamese culture in surrounding communities

Things to do

  • Guided cave tours (boat-assisted visits to Phong Nha Cave, walking tours to Paradise Cave)
  • Multi-day trekking and overnight camping inside permitted caves (Hang En; Son Doong expeditions require advance booking)
  • Riverboat trips on the Son River and scenic kayaking
  • Wildlife watching and guided jungle treks
  • Adventure activities: zipline, mountain biking, cave swimming and mud baths
  • Village homestays and cultural visits to nearby Quang Binh communities

Best Time to Visit

Dry season (February to August) — more stable weather, easier cave access and clearer river conditions. The rainy season (September to January) can bring heavy rains, swollen rivers and temporary cave closures.

Weather Conditions

Tropical monsoon climate: hot, humid summers and a distinct rainy season. Average temperatures typically range from about 20°C to 35°C; heavy rains and typhoon influence are possible in late autumn and winter months.

Entry Fees & Permits

Cave and park fees vary by site and tour operator. Day-access caves (Phong Nha, Paradise, Dark Cave) have per-person entrance and boat/guide fees; specialized expeditions (Son Doong) require permit fees and expensive multi-day guided packages booked well in advance. Most sites operate daily, but individual cave tours have scheduled departure times — check operators ahead of arrival.

Accessibility

Nearest airport: Dong Hoi (Phu Bai?) — actually, the correct nearest airport is Dong Hoi (Quang Binh) Airport (VDH), about 40–50 km from the park entrance. Road access from National Highway 1A and provincial roads; regular buses and private cars run from Dong Hoi and Hue. The North–South railway stops at Dong Hoi station. Final approaches to many caves use riverboat transfers from Phong Nha village. Note: some trails and cave entrances require moderate fitness; Son Doong and multi-day treks have strict physical requirements.

Recommended Duration

2–4 days for a focused visit to Phong Nha, Paradise Cave and Dark Cave; 4–7 days to add extended treks and Hang En; 7–10+ days (and months of advance planning) if aiming for a Son Doong expedition.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Light, breathable clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, waterproof jacket for rainy season, swimwear and quick-dry towel, headlamp or flashlight, insect repellent, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), small first-aid kit. For guided expeditions bring the specialist gear recommended by operators.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Try regional central-Vietnam cuisine and local specialties in Quảng Bình such as noodle soups and fresh river/sea food; sample street food in Phong Nha village and Dong Hoi. Souvenirs include local handicrafts, woven goods, regional chili sauces, and Vietnamese coffee. Support local homestays and responsible tour operators to benefit the community and conservation efforts.
