U Minh Thuong National Park,Vietnam
U Minh Thuong National Park (Vườn quốc gia U Minh Thượng) is one of Vietnam's most important peat-swamp forest ecosystems in the Mekong Delta. The park protects extensive peatlands, a seasonally flooded landscape and associated freshwater swamp forest that store carbon, support flood regulation and sustain rich biodiversity including a variety of waterbirds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. The area is also important to local livelihoods (fishing, honey collection, small-scale agriculture) and serves as a living laboratory for wetland and peatland conservation in southern Vietnam.
Places to visit
- Boat tours through narrow canals and creeks that thread the peat-swamp forest
- Birdwatching sites and observation towers for waterbirds and migratory species
- Raised wooden boardwalks and short trails for guided swamp walks

Best Time to Visit
Dry season (November–April) for easier access, lower water levels in some channels, and the best birdwatching. The wet season (May–October) brings higher water, richer plant growth and different birding opportunities but more mosquitoes and occasional access limitations.
Weather Conditions
Tropical monsoon climate — hot and humid year-round. Heavy rains and occasional storms are frequent during the wet season; dry season is relatively cooler and sunnier.
Entry Fees & Permits
The park generally operates during daylight hours (typical opening around 07:00–17:00). There is a modest entrance fee and boat/tour fees vary by operator. Fees, opening hours and permitted activities can change — check with the park office or local tour operators before visiting.
Accessibility
U Minh Thuong is in Kiên Giang Province in the Mekong Delta. The park is reachable by road and short boat transfers from nearby towns. Common access points are from Rạch Giá or from towns in the surrounding districts; Ho Chi Minh City is the nearest major city (a few hours' drive). Local roads can be narrow and some internal access requires boat travel — organized tours or local guides are recommended.
Recommended Duration
1–2 days. A day trip is possible from nearby provincial towns, but an overnight stay (homestay or nearby guesthouse) lets you catch the best early-morning and late-afternoon wildlife activity.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Lightweight, breathable long-sleeve clothing for sun and mosquito protection; waterproof shoes or sandals; rain jacket in wet season; strong insect repellent; binoculars and a telephoto lens for wildlife photography; sunhat and sunscreen.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Try Mekong Delta specialties such as freshwater fish dishes (e.g., grilled or sour fish preparations), coconut-based desserts and local honey. Souvenirs include local honey, woven mats and handicrafts made from bamboo and reed. When buying wildlife-related products, avoid items of uncertain origin to support conservation.
