Cycling through paddy fields of Kuttanad
A guided, low-intensity cycling experience through the unique below-sea-level paddy fields and backwater villages of Kuttanad in Alappuzha. Riders follow quiet village roads, raised bunds (dykes) between rice paddies and narrow lanes lined with coconut groves, pausing at rural homesteads, coir-making workshops and canals. Option to combine the ride with a short country boat transfer for a mixed land-and-water experience.

Book with a local operator who knows the changing routes in the paddy belt; guides improve safety and storytelling
Prefer a hybrid or touring bike with wider tyres — many small operators provide suitable bikes
Carry small change (INR) for snacks, tips and local purchases; many villages are cash-friendly
Wear modest, lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees when visiting homesteads
Bring a waterproof jacket in monsoon season and a lightweight sun-protective layer in dry season
Start early for cooler temperatures and the best light for photos; late afternoon rides offer golden-hour views
If you have long hair, tie it back — there can be flies near paddies; bring a small first-aid kit for minor scrapes
Respect private property: ask before photographing people at close range and avoid stepping into cultivated paddies
