Alpine climate: cool to cold year‑round. Days in the best seasons are often mild, nights can be near or below freezing. Winters are cold with frequent snowfall at higher elevations.

Rara National Park is generally open year‑round, though access can be restricted in winter. Access options include seasonal flights to the nearby Talcha (Rara) airstrip (STOL service from hubs such as Nepalgunj/Surkhet when available) or overland/jeep approaches followed by a trek of 1–4 days depending on the route. Nearest major domestic hubs are Nepalgunj and Surkhet (reachable from Kathmandu by domestic flight), after which onward connections are by road or small aircraft. Local roads are rough and weather‑dependent—expect delays.

Plan 3–4 days at Rara Lake to explore the immediate area; allow 2–4 additional days for approach/exit travel depending on transport mode. A relaxed itinerary including travel buffer is often 7–10 days.

Bring warm layered clothing (base layers, fleece, insulated jacket), waterproof shell, sturdy trekking boots, warm hat and gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen, trekking poles, and a sleeping bag rated for cold nights if camping. Carry a basic first‑aid kit and altitude‑awareness medications as needed.
