Yuksom,Sikkim

Yuksom is the historic first capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim (established 1642). It is the traditional coronation site of the Namgyal dynasty and an important centre for Nyingma Buddhism in the region. Located at the western gateway to the Kanchenjunga Himalaya, Yuksom is a key base for treks (Dzongri and Goecha La) and is set amid rich rhododendron forests and alpine meadows, making it important both culturally and ecologically.

Places to visit

  • Norbugang Chorten and Coronation Throne — site of the 1642 coronation of the first Chogyal (king) of Sikkim
  • Dubdi Monastery (also called ‘Yuksom Monastery’) — one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim; simple, historic Nyingma architecture
  • Khecheopalri (Kha-Chhoypalri) Lake — a sacred, pilgrim lake set in old-growth forest, ~30 minutes from Yuksom
  • Dzongri and Goecha La trek routes — iconic treks offering panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and alpine landscapes

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) for rhododendron blooms and clear mountain views; Autumn (October–November) for stable weather and post-monsoon visibility. Monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain, slippery trails and limited visibility.

Weather Conditions

Mountain-temperate climate. Days are mild at the village elevation (~1,700–1,800 m) while nights are cool; higher trek camps reach alpine and cold conditions with possible snowfall in winter. Expect sudden weather changes in the hills.

Accessibility

Nearest airport and railhead: Bagdogra Airport (Siliguri) and New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station. From Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP the road journey to Yuksom takes several hours on winding mountain roads (shared/tourist taxis and limited bus services available). Yuksom is also accessible by road from Pelling and Gangtok. Roads can be narrow and affected by monsoon conditions. Inner-line permits are required for foreign nationals entering Sikkim—obtain at entry points or government offices.

Recommended Duration

For Yuksom village and nearby sights: 2–3 days. For trek itineraries including Dzongri and Goecha La: 7–12 days depending on route and acclimatisation.
