Ashtamudi Lake,Kerala
Ashtamudi Lake is the gateway to the Kerala backwaters and one of the most important wetland ecosystems in southern India. It is the second largest estuarine system in Kerala and was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The lake historically sustained local fishing, coir and cashew industries and served as an inland waterway for trade. Its mix of brackish water, mangroves and canals supports rich biodiversity and livelihoods.

Best Time to Visit
October to February for cooler, drier weather and calm backwaters. Monsoon (June–September) is dramatic and lush but sees heavy rain and choppier conditions; shoulder seasons offer fewer tourists.

Nearest major railhead: Kollam Junction (in Kollam city). Nearest airport: Trivandrum International Airport (Thiruvananthapuram) about 65–80 km away by road (approx. 1.5–2.5 hours depending on traffic). The lake is well connected by road; local buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws serve Kollam and lakeside points. Many houseboat operators pick up guests from Kollam or nearby jetties.
Recommended Duration
For a meaningful experience: allow 1 night/2 days for an overnight houseboat or 3–4 hours for a comfortable day cruise. Add an extra day for exploring Kollam town and nearby attractions.
