Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad district in the Western Ghats (approx. 2,100 m / 6,890 ft). It is important as part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, featuring shola-grassland ecosystems, endemic plants and wildlife, and scenic hill landscapes that attract nature lovers and trekkers.

Best Time to Visit

September to May (post-monsoon through late spring). Avoid heavy monsoon months (June–August) when trails are slippery and the area receives heavy rain.

Weather Conditions

Cool to mild in daytime (approx. 10–25°C depending on season). Higher elevations can be chilly, especially early morning and late afternoon; sudden weather changes are possible in the hills.

Base village/starting point: Meppadi (near Kalpetta). Nearest major towns: Kalpetta (Wayanad). Nearest airport: Calicut International Airport (Kozhikode) ~80–100 km by road. Nearest major railway station: Kozhikode (Calicut). Road access is by car or bus to Meppadi/Kalpetta followed by the trek. Entry/permits are issued at the forest checkpost near the trailhead in Meppadi.

Recommended Duration

Allow 4–6 hours for the trek round-trip from the base (time depends on fitness and weather). Plan a half-day to full-day visit.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Sturdy trekking shoes or boots, layered clothing (warm jacket for higher altitude), rain jacket during monsoon/post-monsoon, hat/sunglasses, sunscreen, sufficient drinking water, energy snacks. Carry a basic first-aid kit and insect repellent.
