Located in the Western Ghats in Kollam district, it sits around the Thenmala Dam on the Kallada River and serves as a gateway to the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. The area is important for conservation, rehabilitation of degraded forest landscape and for promoting sustainable tourism that benefits local communities and tribal settlements.

Best Time to Visit

October to February for pleasant weather, clear skies and most activities operational. The post-monsoon months (September–February) are ideal for trekking and wildlife viewing.

Weather Conditions

Tropical wet climate influenced by the Western Ghats. Heavy rains during the southwest monsoon (June–September). Hot and humid in summer (March–May), cooler and pleasant in winter.

Accessibility

Nearest major airport: Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) International Airport (approximately 70–90 km by road). Nearest railheads: Punalur (closest regional railhead) and Kollam (Quilon) for broader rail connections. Thenmala is well connected by road: frequent state buses, private buses and taxis from Kollam, Punalur and Trivandrum. Roads into the hills can be winding; allow extra travel time.

Recommended Duration

A day-trip can cover main highlights (dam view, short treks, canopy walk and boating). For a relaxed visit including wildlife trails and nearby waterfalls, plan 1–2 nights (overnight stay in eco-cottages or nearby homestays).

Clothing & Gear Tips

Lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime; a warm layer for evenings in cooler months. Good trekking shoes, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a light raincoat during monsoon months. Carry a refillable water bottle.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Enjoy Kerala cuisine at local eateries—seafood, traditional curries, appam and kadala curry in nearby towns. Local souvenirs include tribal handicrafts, honey and spice products, hand-woven textiles and eco-friendly crafts promoted by community-run outlets.
