Safety Requirements
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip — rocky and loose terrain is common.
Carry at least 1–2 liters of water per person; more on hot days.
Check weather forecast; avoid hiking in heavy rain or during cyclones (flash flood and slippery rock risk).
Use sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and insect repellent.
If unfamiliar with the route, hire a local guide or go with an experienced group.
Keep to marked paths where possible and respect private land boundaries.
Bring a basic first-aid kit and a charged mobile phone; signal can be spotty at times.
Tips
Start early for cooler temperatures, clearer views and fewer people — sunrise hikes are especially beautiful.
No formal permit usually required, but check local notices if trails are closed for maintenance.
Wear layered clothing — higher elevations can be cooler and windier than the coast.
Bring snacks and a compact rain jacket — weather can change quickly.
Leave no trace: take all rubbish with you and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Consider hiring a local guide for history, flora/fauna identification and safer route-finding — guides can be booked through local tour operators or accommodations.
Combine the hike with nearby attractions: SSR Botanical Garden, Port Louis market or a coastal drive.
