Submarine or subscooter ride
Experience Mauritius' coral world without getting wet (semi-submarine) or with an exhilarating assisted underwater ride (subscooter). Choose a glass/semi-submarine for relaxed, dry underwater sightseeing ideal for families and non-swimmers, or a subscooter (diver-propulsion vehicle) for a guided, hands-on underwater adventure for confident snorkelers/divers.
Location
Coastal waters off Trou‑aux‑Biches and Grand Baie (northwest Mauritius), Grand Baie / Trou‑aux‑Biches, Mauritius
Duration
30–60 minutes depending on the option (semi-submarine typically 30–45 min; subscooter 30–60 min including briefing)
Best Time to Visit
Best: May–December (drier seas, clearer visibility). Avoid peak cyclone season / rough sea periods (Nov–Apr can be variable) — check local weather and operator advisories.

Itinerary
Meet & check-in
Arrive at operator's base or jetty 15–20 minutes early for check-in, paperwork, and safety briefing. Bring ID.
Safety briefing and equipment fitting
For subscooter: learn hand signals, scooter controls, and emergency procedures. For semi-submarine: short introduction about viewing deck and movement.
Underwater experience
Semi-submarine cruises a reef corridor; subscooter groups are guided over reef sections with frequent stops for observation and photos. Operators vary the route by sea conditions.
Return & debrief
Return to jetty, collect belongings. Some operators share photos or short video; gratuities appreciated for guides.
Safety Requirements
Semi-submarine: suitable for non-swimmers and children (check minimum age — often 3–4 years).
Sub-scooter: basic snorkeling ability and comfort in open water required; minimum age and weight restrictions (commonly 12+ and >35 kg) — confirm with operator.
Not recommended for pregnant guests, people with serious cardiac or respiratory conditions, or recent surgery.
Follow guide instructions and hand signals at all times; do not touch or stand on corals.
Weather and sea conditions can cause cancellations — operators may refuse participation if unsafe.
Tips
Book in advance during peak season (July–September and December–January) — popular slots fill quickly.
Bring sunscreen (reef-safe recommended), a hat, and sunglasses for waiting on deck; leave jewellery at home to avoid loss.
For subscooter: wear a swimsuit and quick-dry clothing; operators usually provide masks, snorkels, fins, and life jackets — verify inclusions.
Carry a waterproof camera or request the operator's photo package; confirm whether photos/videos are included or extra.
Ask about group size and guide-to-participant ratio — smaller groups give a better experience and less reef impact.
If you suffer from seasickness, take preventative medication before boarding; choose calmer morning slots if you’re prone to motion sickness.
Respect marine life: no feeding, touching, or removing anything from the reef. Many trips operate inside marine park zones — there may be a conservation fee.
