Itinerary
Arrival, Orientation & Evening Night Dive Option
Arrive at Velana International Airport, Malé. Meet our representative and transfer to your hotel. Attend a welcome briefing covering the week: safety, itinerary, and conservation goals. Afternoon at leisure to adjust and rest. Evening: Optional night dive or guided night snorkel for certified divers to spot nocturnal reef life.
Activities include equipment check and intro to night-diving protocols.
Transfer to South Ari Atoll — First Full Dive Day
Speedboat or seaplane transfer to South Ari Marine Protected Area early morning. After check-in, attend a marine biology orientation: coral ID basics, survey methods, and species to watch for (manta rays, reef sharks, turtles). Two guided dives focusing on reef ecology and identifying key indicator species. Evening: workshop on reef threats and conservation strategies followed by a night dive focusing on nocturnal invertebrates.
Note: Transfers depend on sea and weather conditions; seaplane schedules are seasonal.
Manta & Large Pelagic Search — Marine Biology Fieldwork
Full day of diving in prime pelagic zones. Morning: manta-ray cleaning station dive and identification session — similar to the world-renowned snorkel with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay experience. Midday: underwater photography tips for documenting flora & fauna. Afternoon: guided reef survey using transect techniques — contribute data to a citizen-science platform. Night: targeted night dive to document crustaceans and cephalopods.
Bring a camera if you have one; briefing covers responsible wildlife interaction.
Coral Restoration & Specialized Workshops
Hands-on morning: join a coral restoration activity — outplanting nursery fragments under instructor supervision. Midday lecture on coral bleaching, resilience, and lab methods used in marine research. Afternoon dives: a deep reef ecology dive at Maaya Thila and a drift/blue-water session to study planktonic life. Evening: debrief and data logging session.
Participants may get wet-hand involvement in restoration projects; suitable footwear and quick-dry clothing recommended.
Transfer to North Malé Atoll — Wreck & Shark Dives
Transfer to North Malé Atoll. After settling in, explore famous wreck sites such as the Maldivian Victory Wreck or pinnacles with abundant reef fish and macro life. Afternoon: shark cleaning station or channel dive to observe reef sharks and schooling species. Evening: night dive focusing on macro critters and bioluminescence (when present).
Wreck access depends on dive certification—advanced dives may be optional with prior experience.
Advanced Surveys, Cultural Visit & Conservation Evening
Morning: select between an advanced survey (photo-quadrats or fish census) or a specialty dive (deep wreck/ledge). Midday: visit a local island for a cultural tour and conservation talk with community members—learn about sustainable fisheries and reef protection efforts. Final evening: celebratory presentation certificates; last night dive option for certified divers.
Respect local customs during island visits; modest clothing is recommended for onshore stops.
Departure Day — Final Briefing & Transfer to Malé
Leisurely morning with optional sunrise snorkel or relaxing on the beach. Final wrap-up session: review survey findings, receive participation certificate, and get advice for continuing marine citizen-science at home. Midday transfer back to Malé (Velana International Airport) for international departures.
Check-out times and transfer schedules vary; allow adequate time for seaplane or speedboat connections.
