Amarnath Cave pilgrimage (seasonal Jul–Aug)
Seasonal Hindu pilgrimage to the sacred ice Shiva Lingam in the Amarnath Cave. The yatra follows one of two main routes — the longer, scenic Pahalgam (Chandanwari) route or the shorter, steeper Baltal route (Ganderbal). It is a high‑altitude trek through alpine meadows, river valleys and can reach heavy crowds during the official window. Pilgrims undertake it for religious devotion, and the experience combines spiritual significance with demanding mountain trekking.

Location
Amarnath Cave (via Pahalgam or Baltal), Pahalgam (Anantnag) / Baltal (Ganderbal), Kashmir, India
Duration
Typically 6–12 days depending on route, pace and starting point (shortest Baltal option can be completed in 2–3 days from Baltal with helicopter options; Pahalgam route usually 6–8 days round trip by foot).
Best Time to Visit
Official yatra season: July–August (dates announced annually by Shri Amarnath Shrine Board). Avoid outside the season — the route is closed in winter.

Itinerary
Arrive Srinagar — obtain or confirm yatra registration, medical certificate if required, and keep necessary ID documents ready.
Rest and acclimatize; buy/update required gear in Srinagar if needed.
Drive to Pahalgam (for Chandanwari approach) or Baltal (for Baltal approach) depending on chosen route.
Pahalgam drive ~2–3 hours; Baltal ~1.5–2.5 hours from Srinagar. Final vehicle permissions vary; check SASB instructions.
Pahalgam route: Trek from Chandanwari to Sheshnag / overnight at Sheshnag. Baltal route: Begin trek toward Chandanwari/Panchtarni or take pony/helicopter options.
Pahalgam approach is gradual and scenic; Baltal is steeper but much shorter. Altitudes increase; monitor for AMS symptoms.
Continue trek toward Panchtarni and then to the Amarnath Cave. Reach cave, perform darshan, and return to Panchtarni for night stay or continue descent depending on plan.
Darshan queues and weather can cause delays; allocate buffer time. Respect queue management and local volunteers/officials.
Return trek to base (Pahalgam / Baltal) and transfer back to Srinagar; rest and depart.
Many pilgrims schedule 1–2 rest days after return before travelling further.
Safety Requirements
Mandatory online and onsite registration as per Shri Amarnath Shrine Board rules; carry registration slip and original ID
Medical check and height/fitness screening at designated points (carry a medical certificate if required)
High‑altitude precautions: gradual ascent, stay hydrated, recognize and treat acute mountain sickness (AMS)
Proper trekking gear (insulated clothing, waterproof jacket, trekking boots, headlamp, walking sticks)
Follow instructions of local authorities, police and volunteer agencies; do not attempt the cave in bad weather
Be cautious of crowds and queue management; carry a small first‑aid kit and personal medications
Tips
Register early on the official SASB portal and keep copies of confirmations and ID.
If unfit for long treks, consider pony/porter or helicopter options (book in advance and budget accordingly).
Pack layers — weather at altitude changes rapidly (cold nights even in July–August).
Carry sufficient cash; connectivity and ATMs are limited en route.
Use only licensed service providers for ponies/porters/helicopters and get price receipts.
Respect local customs and langars (community kitchens); maintain cleanliness and carry back non‑biodegradable waste.
Acclimatize in Srinagar/Pahalgam for 24–48 hours if arriving from low altitude to reduce AMS risk.
Check official SASB updates for route status, dates, and any COVID/health requirements before travel.
