Itinerary

  1. Arrive in Srinagar or Kupwara; overnight in Srinagar or guesthouse in Kupwara to prepare.

If arriving in Srinagar, expect a 2–4 hour drive to Kupwara depending on traffic and stops. Stock up on supplies and confirm permits with your operator.

  2. Drive from Kupwara to the Bangus approach point, then short trek to campsite in the meadows.

Drive time varies (2–4 hours on mountain roads) depending on chosen approach. Trek may be 1–3 hours with moderate gradients; porters can carry heavy loads. Set up camp and explore nearby meadows; evening campfire and dinner.

  3. Explore the valley: meadow walks, photographer's circuit, visit shepherd huts, optional day-trek to nearby ridgelines or streams.

Carry packed lunch and water. Ideal for sunrise/sunset shoots and birdwatching. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

  4. Sunrise walk, pack up camp, return trek to vehicle and drive back to Kupwara/Srinagar.

Allow flexibility for road or weather delays. Alternatively extend stay by one more day for deeper exploration.

Safety Requirements

  • Carry permits if required by local authorities; check with the District Administration or your operator in advance.

  • Altitude is moderate (generally 2,500–3,200 m in different parts) — drink water, move slowly and watch for mild AMS symptoms.

  • Weather can change rapidly — bring layered warm and waterproof clothing.

  • Hire an experienced local guide and, for remote camps, a ground support crew (cook/porter).

  • Road and security situation in parts of Kupwara can change; check current travel advisories and travel with a reputable operator.

  • Carry a first-aid kit, altitude medication if advised by a physician, and emergency contact numbers.

  • Respect wildlife — keep distance and secure food properly to avoid attracting animals.

  • Ensure tents and stoves are set up safely; follow fire-safety rules and use portable gas stoves where permitted.

Tips

  • Acclimatize in Srinagar or lower-altitude stops before heading into the high meadows.

  • Pack a warm sleeping bag rated to at least -5°C if camping between June–September nights can still be chilly.

  • Bring sturdy trekking shoes, waterproof jacket, sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellent.

  • Carry cash (small denominations) — ATMs are limited in remote areas.

  • Mobile network is intermittent in Bangus — download maps offline and share your itinerary with someone back home.

  • Respect local customs and private grazing areas; ask before photographing people.

  • Follow 'Leave No Trace' — carry out all non-biodegradable waste and minimize campfire use.

  • If you want fewer logistics hassles, book with a local operator who handles permits, transport and camping gear.

  • Best photography times: golden hour at sunrise and sunset; macro shots of alpine flowers mid-morning.

  • Plan flexible travel time for road conditions, and keep an extra day buffer in case of weather-related delays.
