  • Aru Valley loop — varied terrain with flowing singletrack and meadow descents

  • Betaab Valley & Chandanwari approaches — scenic but busier with tourists

  • High-altitude approaches toward Sheshnag/Tulian for experienced riders

  • River crossings, wildflower meadows, shepherd settlements and grazing livestock

  • Local Kashmiri hospitality for overnight homestays and tea stops

Itinerary

  1. Arrival, bike fit and short warm-up ride to Baisaran (2–3 hours)

Easier gradients, ideal for acclimatization and checking gear; altitude ~2,400m at some meadow edges. Good for beginners and families.

  2. Aru Valley loop (6–7 hours, moderate)

Climb out of Pahalgam to Aru, ride alpine meadows, singletrack descents back toward the town. Expect mixed surfaces: dirt roads, rocky sections and grassy tracks. Carry lunch and water.

  3. Betaab Valley & Chandanwari ride (3–6 hours)

Scenic riverside riding with some popular tourist sections; can be combined with photography stops and short hikes to viewpoints.

  4. High-altitude shuttle + ride toward Sheshnag/Tulian approach (requires trekking/bike-carry sections)

For experienced riders only — technical stretches, possible portage, weather-sensitive. Arrange guides and permits. Overnight camping or shepherd huts on multi-day expeditions.

Safety Requirements

  • Wear a certified helmet and gloves; consider knee and elbow protection for technical sections

  • Carry a basic repair kit: spare tubes, pump, multitool, patch kit and chain quick-link

  • Bring sufficient water, high-energy snacks and a small first-aid kit

  • Check weather and avoid unstable monsoon days (risk of landslides)

  • Inform your guesthouse/guide of route and expected return time; mobile coverage can be intermittent

  • Acclimatize — Pahalgam is at ~2,200–2,400 m; watch for altitude-related symptoms on rapid exertion

  • Hire an experienced local guide for remote or high-altitude routes and for river crossings

  • Permits/permissions: day-trips usually fine, but some remote or protected areas may require local permissions — check with local authorities or your operator

Tips

  • Rent from a reputable shop in Pahalgam—insist on a safety check and suspension service if using a full-suspension bike

  • Start early (07:00–08:00) to avoid afternoon weather changes and tourist crowds in popular spots

  • Carry layered clothing, waterproof jacket and warm base layers — mountain weather changes quickly

  • Bring cash (local vendors and tea stalls may not accept cards) and a power bank for phone/GPS

  • Respect local customs and shepherds' grazing areas; avoid disturbing livestock

  • If you’re not confident with technical descents, walk tricky sections — better safe than injured

  • Book guided multi-day trips well in advance in peak season (July–September)

  • Consider a vehicle shuttle to access higher trailheads to maximize riding and minimize climbing
