Itinerary
Arrive at Gulmarg Gondola base station
Buy tickets at the counter or confirm online reservation. Carry government ID (often required). Try to arrive early to avoid queues and maximize clear weather.
Phase 1 Gondola: Gulmarg → Kongdoori
A smooth 6–8 minute ride to the Kongdoori station. Enjoy views as the valley opens up. Disembark and acclimatize briefly.
Explore Kongdoori
Short walks, photo stops, snow play in winter, or meadow strolls in summer. Optional pony or sled rides in season.
Phase 2 Gondola: Kongdoori → Apharwat
Smaller cabins; the ride gains more elevation and offers panoramic summit views. At times the second phase may be suspended in extreme weather.
Apharwat activities and viewpoints
Skiing/snowboarding (seasonal), snowmobile rides, guided short treks, or simply enjoy the view. Keep an eye on time and weather.
Return descent
Ride back to Gulmarg via Phase 2 and Phase 1. If lines are long, expect some wait time.
Safety Requirements
Carry valid ID for ticketing and entry.
Dress in warm, layered clothing; temperatures at Apharwat are significantly colder than Gulmarg village.
High-altitude caution: some visitors may experience breathlessness; take it slow, hydrate and avoid strenuous activity immediately after ascent.
Follow gondola staff instructions — remain seated while cabin is moving and avoid leaning on doors.
If engaging in skiing or snow activities, use certified equipment and wear a helmet; book lessons with accredited instructors if inexperienced.
Gondola operations can stop in high winds or heavy snowfall; always check weather and operating updates before planning the ride.
Tips
Book gondola tickets in advance during peak season and weekends to avoid long queues.
Carry sunscreen, sunglasses and a windproof jacket — UV and wind exposure increase with altitude.
Keep small change or a credit/debit card; the ticket counter may accept various modes of payment but rural ATMs are limited.
Check the Gondola operating hours and status — Phase 2 (to Apharwat) is more likely to close in adverse weather.
If you plan to ski, pre-book equipment rental and lessons in Gulmarg to save time at the top.
Respect local rules and avoid feeding wildlife. Be mindful of altitude-related symptoms and descend if you feel unwell.
Photography: for wide vistas, use a polarizing filter to reduce glare on snow and enhance sky contrast.
