Stroll Shalimar Bagh (Mughal Garden)
Shalimar Bagh (Shalimar Mughal Garden) is one of Srinagar's most celebrated Mughal gardens, laid out in the 17th century by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Noor Jahan. The garden is set on a natural terraced hillside, fed by springs and canals from Dal Lake, and is known for its formal terraces, cascading fountains, chinar and cypress trees, and a central water cascade that reflects Mughal landscape architecture. A leisurely stroll through Shalimar offers a blend of history, horticulture, and panoramic views of Dal Lake and the Zabarwan mountain range.

Upper terrace and royal pavilion
Start at the top terrace to view the garden’s axial layout and royal pavilion; spend time on raised platforms for panoramic views of Dal Lake.
Central cascade and fountains
Walk down the series of terraces following the water channels and fountains — classical Mughal water engineering is best appreciated here.
Tree-lined promenades and photography

Finish with a short walk toward the Dal Lake edge; you can combine the visit with a shikara ride or a visit to nearby Nishat Bagh if time allows.
Safety Requirements
Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes — paths include stone steps and uneven surfaces.
Carry sun protection (hat, sunscreen) in summer and warm layers in shoulder seasons.
Stay within marked garden areas — some terraces and pavilions are fragile or restricted for conservation.
Beware of wet or slippery stones near water channels and fountains, especially after rain.
Keep hydrated; there are limited refreshment stalls inside the historic compound.
Tips
Visit early morning for soft light, cool air, and fewer crowds.
Combine Shalimar with a visit to nearby Nishat Bagh and a shikara ride on Dal Lake for a half-day itinerary.
Carry a small camera or smartphone — many framed vistas and reflections make for excellent photographs.
Respect the heritage site: do not climb on structures, avoid littering, and follow signage.
If mobility is limited, note there are terraces and steps — check at the entrance for alternative routes or staff assistance.
Carry modest cash for entry, local sellers, or boat rides as card facilities may be limited.
