This activity combines a serene shikara (boat) ride across reed-fringed waters with guided birdwatching focusing on resident and winter migrant species. Expect wide open lake vistas, marsh islands, reed beds, and panoramic views of the surrounding Pir Panjal and Himalayan foothills.

Itinerary
Sunrise birding cruise
Best time for active waterfowl, low light photography, and listening for reed-bed songbirds. Wear warm layers in winter.
Break / local village visit
Tea/snack with local boatmen or short walk on the lakeshore to scan for shorebirds.
Half-day exploration of islands and reed beds
Focused birding with a naturalist: search reed fringes, small islands and shallow bays for specialist species; picnic option available.
Sunset/late-afternoon cruise
Good for silhouette shots, cormorant-fishing activity, and calmer winds; ideal end to a full-day outing.
Safety Requirements
Wear a properly fitted life jacket at all times while on the boat.
Check weather and wind conditions before departure — strong winds can make small boats unstable.
Use an experienced local boatman/guide familiar with shallow channels and reeds.
Observe boat capacity limits; do not overload shikaras.
Maintain a safe distance from nesting/roosting birds and avoid sudden loud noises.
Carry basic first-aid, necessary medication and inform the guide of any medical conditions.
Tips
Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens if you plan to photograph birds.
Carry layered clothing — mornings can be very cold in winter, afternoons mild in summer.
Use insect repellent and sun protection (hat, sunscreen) depending on season.
Hire a local naturalist or experienced boatman — they know the best birding spots and behavior patterns.
Carry cash for boat hire, tips and small purchases — card facilities may be limited.
Be quiet and move slowly; avoid feeding birds or disturbing nests.
Start early (sunrise) for the most active birdwatching and best light.
Respect local private property and wetland conservation rules; take all rubbish with you.
