Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Springs Day Trip
Mount Kinabalu stands at 4,095 metres and dominates every Sabah itinerary, but most travellers see it on a day trip rather than a summit climb. The drive from Kota Kinabalu takes about two hours along the Tamparuli road, climbing to around 1,500 metres where the air drops to 15-20 degrees Celsius even at midday.
Kinabalu Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the botanical garden at park headquarters holds pitcher plants, wild orchids and rhododendrons on a short guided walk. The Timpohon Gate viewpoint and the mountain garden give the clearest photographs of the granite summit, usually visible before 10 am before cloud builds up.
Afterwards the road drops to Poring Hot Springs in Ranau, where sulphur water is piped into open-air tubs and enclosed baths. The Poring canopy walkway sits 41 metres above the forest floor, and a short trail leads to Kipungit Waterfall. During flowering season the nearby Rafflesia sites open to visitors, though blooms are unpredictable and cost extra.
Many packages add a stop at the Nabalu handicraft market for tribal weaving and local fruit, and Sabah Tea Garden or Desa Dairy Farm with its Swiss-style pastures.
