Taman Negara Rainforest Canopy Walk and Rapid Shooting
Taman Negara covers about 4,343 sq km across Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu and is one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests. Most trips start from Kuala Tahan, reached by a three to four hour road transfer from Kuala Lumpur, often with a longboat ride along the Tembeling River for the final stretch.
The main draw is the canopy walkway, a suspended bridge sequence strung between tall tualang trees roughly 40 metres above the forest floor and around 530 metres long. It is stable but sways, and only a few people cross each section at a time. A short jungle trek follows the boardwalk to Bukit Teresek, where a viewpoint looks across to Gunung Tahan, peninsular Malaysia's highest peak.
Afternoons usually cover rapid shooting, where a wooden longboat runs the Tembeling rapids and the boatman deliberately soaks passengers, and a visit to an Orang Asli Batek settlement to see blowpipe demonstrations and fire-making. Night jungle walks with torches reveal stick insects, scorpions and tree frogs.
Day trips from KL are possible but rushed; an overnight stay at Mutiara Taman Negara or a Kuala Tahan floating restaurant guesthouse gives time for the night walk and cave visits at Gua Telinga.
