Mauritius visa & passport guide
Everything Indian passport holders need to visit Mauritius — visa type, fees, processing time, documents, and the step-by-step application process.
Mauritius Visa for Indian Passport Holders
Indian passport holders get a free visa on arrival in Mauritius for tourism, valid for up to 60 days per visit. No advance application or embassy visit is needed, but immigration at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport will check your return ticket, confirmed hotel booking and proof of funds before stamping you in. Keep printed copies of these documents, since officers do ask for them.
Documents Required
- Original passport valid 6 months beyond arrival
- Confirmed return or onward air ticket
- Confirmed hotel booking for the full stay, or a letter of invitation with the host's address and ID copy if staying with family or friends
- Proof of sufficient funds, roughly USD 100 per day of stay, shown as bank statements of the last 3 to 6 months, forex card or cash
- Completed Mauritius Passenger Arrival / Health form (filled online before departure through the official All-in-One travel portal)
- Travel insurance covering the trip (strongly advised, occasionally asked for)
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate only if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever risk country in Africa or South America
How to Apply
- 1Book your return flight and hotels first, since immigration wants confirmed bookings, not tentative ones.
- 2Within a few days of travel, fill the Mauritius All-in-One Travel Form online and save the confirmation on your phone plus a printout.
- 3Carry a document folder with passport, tickets, hotel vouchers, bank statements and insurance in print, not just digital copies.
- 4On landing at SSR International Airport in Plaisance, join the foreign nationals queue at immigration and hand over your passport with the supporting documents.
- 5Answer basic questions on purpose of visit, length of stay and where you are staying, then collect your stamped passport showing the permitted stay.
- 6If you need to extend beyond the granted period, apply at the Passport and Immigration Office in Port Louis before the stamp expires.
Good to Know
- Visa on arrival is granted at the officer's discretion. Travellers who arrive with a one-way ticket or no hotel booking have been refused boarding at Indian airports itself, since airlines check onward tickets.
- Carry at least some cash in USD or EUR rather than only INR. Indian rupees are not exchanged easily in Mauritius, and a small amount of hard currency helps if funds proof is asked.
- The tourist stay is strictly for tourism. Any hint of job hunting, business meetings or long unexplained stays leads to detailed questioning, so keep your answers simple and consistent with your bookings.
- Best weather is May to December, dry and around 22 to 27 degrees. January to March is cyclone season with heavy rain, and flights do get disrupted.
- Ferry or day cruises to Rodrigues Island are domestic travel within Mauritius and need no separate visa, but carry your passport anyway.
- If you plan to visit Reunion Island alongside Mauritius, remember Reunion is French territory and needs a separate Schengen-style DOM visa applied for in India well in advance.
- Mauritius bans import of many food items. Do not carry homemade pickles, meat products, seeds or plants. Customs checks bags of Indian travellers fairly closely.
- Keep the immigration stamp page photographed. Hotels and car rental agencies in Grand Baie and Flic en Flac often ask to see it.
