Best Time to Visit
May to June and September to November for pleasant weather and trekking; December to February for snowy scenery (cold) if you enjoy winter landscapes. Monsoon (July–August) is least recommended due to heavy rains and landslide risk.
Weather Conditions
Mountain climate: cool to cold year-round. Summers are mild (10–25°C), monsoon brings heavy rain, and winters are cold with snowfall (temperatures can drop below freezing). Weather can change rapidly in the higher reaches.
Accessibility
Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) — approximately 150–170 km by road (2.5–6+ hours depending on road conditions). Nearest major railway stations: Rishikesh (~140 km) and Haridwar (~165 km). Uttarkashi is connected by road (state highways) but routes are mountain roads that can be narrow and subject to landslides during the monsoon; private taxis, buses and shared jeeps are common modes of arrival.
Recommended Duration
2–4 days to explore Uttarkashi town and nearby attractions; add 4–10+ days for trekking, Gangotri or extended exploration of Harshil and surrounding valleys.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Layered clothing (thermal base layers, fleece, warm jacket), sturdy trekking boots, rain jacket/poncho (monsoon), hat and gloves for winter, sunscreen and sunglasses. Altitude-appropriate medication and a basic first-aid kit are recommended.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Try Garhwali specialties such as Aloo ke Gutke, Kafuli, and local sweets like Bal Mithai; Harshil apples and apple products are a local highlight. Souvenirs: woolens (shawls, caps), handmade Garhwali handicrafts, religious items (rudraksha beads, prayer shawls) and local preserves/jams.
