Gadsar Lake,Kashmir
Natural importance: Gadsar Lake (also spelled Gadsar Sar) is a high-altitude alpine oligotrophic lake in the Kashmir Himalaya, renowned for its clear turquoise waters, surrounding glaciers and seasonal trout population. It forms a spectacular part of the Kashmir Great Lakes circuit and is important for local pastoralism (summer grazing) and mountain biodiversity.

Best Time to Visit
June to September (snow-free trails and milder weather; July–August are peak months for flowers and clear views). Late spring or early autumn may still have snow on passes.
Weather Conditions
Alpine weather: daytime can be mild (5–15°C) in summer, nights often drop to near or below 0°C. Sudden temperature drops, wind, rain or snow are possible even in summer. Carry layered, waterproof clothing.
Accessibility
Gadsar Lake is accessible only by foot as part of multi-day treks. Common approaches start from Sonamarg (east) or Naranag (west) as roadheads. Nearest major city and transport hub: Srinagar (airport and rail connections). Expect several hours to multiple days of trekking from the nearest motorable point depending on route.
Recommended Duration
If visiting as part of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, allocate 6–8 days for the full circuit. For day visits to the lake specifically, plan at least 1 full day at the site for exploration and acclimatization, plus travel time to/from the trailhead.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Warm layered clothing, waterproof shell, insulated jacket, sturdy waterproof trekking boots, warm hat and gloves, sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures (if camping), trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, water purification, basic first-aid and altitude-sickness medication.
Local Food & Souvenirs
On-trek food is typically simple (tinned/packaged meals, local staples provided by guides). Near base towns try Kashmiri dishes in Srinagar or Sonamarg. Souvenirs from the region include Pashmina shawls, saffron, Kashmiri handicrafts, walnut woodware and dry fruits. If considering trout, check local regulations and obtain permits before fishing.
