Marsar Lake,Kashmir
Marsar Lake is a high-altitude alpine lake in the Kashmir Himalaya, known for its pristine waters, surrounding meadows (margs) and role in the popular Tarsar–Marsar trekking circuit. It is important ecologically as a seasonal grazing and biodiversity area and scenically for its reflections of the surrounding peaks. The lake contributes to local pastoral livelihoods during summer months and forms part of the cultural landscape of shepherd communities in the Lidder/Aru valleys.

Best Time to Visit
June to September — summer and early autumn months when snow has melted on approach routes and meadows are accessible. Outside this window heavy snow makes access difficult or unsafe.
Weather Conditions
Alpine mountain climate: cool to mild days, cold nights. Rapid weather changes are common — be prepared for sun, wind, rain and sudden temperature drops. Expect sub-zero temperatures at night even in summer at high camps.
Accessibility
Access requires a road approach to a trailhead (commonly via Pahalgam/Aru or Lidderwat), followed by a multi-day trek over mountain trails. Nearest major airport: Srinagar (SXR); nearest towns/roadheads: Pahalgam / Aru. Expect a 2–4 day trek (one way or circuit) depending on itinerary and starting point; technical equipment is not usually required but good fitness and high-altitude trekking experience are recommended.
Recommended Duration
Allocate 3–5 days for a focused visit including approach and return to the nearest roadhead. For a relaxed circuit or to include both lakes and side valleys, plan 5–8 days.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Warm layered clothing, waterproof windproof jacket, thermal base layers, sturdy waterproof trekking boots, sunhat and sunglasses, sunscreen, warm sleeping bag (rated for near-freezing or below), trekking poles, basic first-aid and altitude-aware medication if needed.
Local Food & Souvenirs
On-trail food is basic — pack high-energy snacks and any specialized dietary items. In nearby villages/towns try local Kashmiri cuisine such as simple roasts, stews and tea/ kahwa at guesthouses. Souvenirs available in Pahalgam/Srinagar include Kashmiri shawls/pashmina, walnut wood handicrafts, and local produce (saffron and dried fruits available regionally).
