Itinerary
Arrival in Kochi and Transfer to Thattekad
Arrive at Cochin (Kochi) International Airport and meet your representative. Drive to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Check in to your nature lodge and relax.
Late afternoon: short orientation walk around the lodge grounds to spot resident birds such as Malabar grey hornbill, Indian pitta and common kingfishers. Dinner at the lodge.
Tip: If you arrive early, request a quick evening boat ride on the Periyar tributary to look for waterbirds.
Full-Day Birdwatching at Thattekad
Early-morning guided birdwatching session inside Thattekad Bird Sanctuary with an experienced naturalist. Look for speciality species like Sri Lanka frogmouth, Malabar trogon, and varied passerines.
Midday: return to lodge for breakfast and a short rest. Afternoon: visit nearby riparian zones and lesser-explored trails; evening talk on local ecology followed by dinner.
Important: Carry binoculars, sun protection and bottled water. Walking involves uneven forest paths.
Drive to Kumarakom via Scenic Route
After an early breakfast, depart for Kumarakom (approx. 2.5–3 hours). En route enjoy scenic stops and light refreshments.
Afternoon: check-in at a backwater resort in Kumarakom. Late afternoon boat cruise on Vembanad Lake to observe waterbirds — egrets, herons, terns and, seasonally, migratory waders. Evening free to enjoy resort facilities.
Highlight: Sunset over Vembanad Lake offers excellent photography opportunities.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary & Village Walk
Early morning guided tour of Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (island sanctuary on Vembanad Lake). Spot painted stork, white-bellied sea eagle, and resident marsh birds.
Late morning: return to resort for breakfast. Midday: optional pottery demonstration or bicycle ride through paddy fields. Afternoon: traditional country boat (vallam) ride through narrow canals and reed beds.
Evening: enjoy a cultural performance (Kathakali/folk music) depending on availability.
Tip: Carry a lightweight raincoat during the monsoon (June–September) and waterproof gear for cameras.
Backwater Activities and Optional Houseboat Experience
Morning at leisure — optional Ayurvedic massage or resort activities. Post-lunch, join a guided canoe/kayak excursion into quiet backwater channels to spot kingfishers, herons and small marsh birds.
Option: Board an overnight traditional Kerala houseboat (subject to preference) for a slow cruise along the Vembanad Lake — includes village stops and sunset views. If you prefer to stay on land, continue to explore local fisheries and coir-making units.
Note: Houseboat option may be booked in place of one resort night; please request in advance.
Transfer to Munroe Island and Mangrove Trails
After breakfast, transfer to Munroe Island (approx. 1–1.5 hours). Check in to a homestay or small eco-lodge.
Afternoon: guided mangrove trail by canoe/kayak through narrow channels—observe mangrove-associated species, mudskippers and kingfishers; visit tiny island settlements and learn traditional salt- and coir-making.
Evening: enjoy a homestay dinner with local Keralite specialties.
Highlight: Munroe Island offers some of the best intimate mangrove exploration near Kumarakom.
Morning Trails and Departure to Kochi
Early morning birding or village walk on Munroe Island to catch morning activity in the mangroves. After breakfast, check out and transfer to Cochin (Kochi) (approx. 1.5–2 hours) for onward journey or flight departure.
If time permits, a short guided tour of Fort Kochi (Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church) can be arranged before drop-off.
Note: Standard checkout times apply; we recommend scheduling flights after mid-afternoon for a relaxed departure.

Kerala Houseboat Rebooked While We Were Still Upset
We had confirmed a houseboat stay in Alleppey for our anniversary, and two days before, the operator cancelled without warning. My wife was really disappointed — this was the one thing she had been looking forward to the whole trip. I called our coordinator at TourGrids around 9 PM expecting to hear 'we'll try', but by next morning he had a replacement houseboat booked, same stretch, actually better reviews than the original. No extra charge, no back and forth. Rest of the Kerala itinerary — Munnar, Fort Kochi, the drives — everything ran exactly as planned. Hotels were proper good, cabs were always on time. This was our first time booking through a travel company and honestly it removed so much weight from the trip.
Kerala Took Shape Before I Touched a Browser
I was planning a Kerala trip for my wife and me and honestly had no idea where to start — backwaters, hill stations, beaches, it felt overwhelming. A friend suggested TourGrids, so I dropped them a message on WhatsApp. Within the hour, someone from their team called and just asked us what kind of trip we wanted. No sales pitch, proper conversation. Two calls later, the itinerary was ready — Munnar, Alleppey houseboat, Kovalam, all sequenced properly with cab transfers included. They adjusted the houseboat night when I asked, no fuss. Hotels were proper good, no hidden charges at the end. Planning something this detailed usually stresses me out, but this time it genuinely did not.
Kerala Hotels and Cabs Left Nothing to Complain
Travelled to Kerala with my wife last month and honestly the accommodations TourGrids arranged were the highlight. We stayed at a proper resort in Munnar and a lovely heritage property in Alleppey — both were well above what I'd have found on my own at that budget. No compromise on cleanliness or location. The cab transfers were equally solid — same driver for most legs, always on time, comfortable vehicle. No last-minute confusion about pickups or drop timings. Our coordinator Priya had everything pre-confirmed and shared details on WhatsApp the night before each transfer. We just had to show up. For a couple wanting a relaxed Kerala trip without the usual booking chaos, this worked out really well.
Kerala With a Stranger I Ended Up Trusting
First time booking through a travel company — I'd always planned trips myself because I didn't trust anyone with my money or my holiday. A colleague suggested TourGrids, so I got on a call with them before committing anything. They listened properly, no upselling, just asked what my wife and I actually wanted from Kerala. The itinerary they sent back felt personal — Alleppey, Munnar, the right balance of relaxed and packed. Hotels were proper good, cabs were always on time, and no hidden charges when we settled the final bill. The coordinator was reachable throughout, even when we had a small room query at night. Took one trip to change how I travel.
Kerala Houseboat Date Changed, Nobody Panicked But Them
Two days before our Alleppey houseboat stay, my husband realised he'd mixed up the dates on his leave — we needed to shift everything by one day. I was sure it was going to be a mess. Called our TourGrids coordinator around 8 PM, fully expecting bad news. He checked availability, spoke to the property, and had it sorted within the hour. Hotel in Munnar also got adjusted without any fuss. No extra charges were added without explanation, and he kept us updated through WhatsApp the whole time. Rest of the Kerala trip went exactly as planned — backwaters, spice gardens, the works. Genuinely relieved we didn't try to plan this ourselves.
Kerala Resorts and Cabs Both Felt Premium
We did Kerala as a couple trip last month and honestly the properties TourGrids picked were a cut above what I'd found on my own. The resort in Munnar had a valley view I wasn't even expecting, and the houseboat in Alleppey was proper good — clean, well-maintained, not the budget kind. What also stood out was how clean the cab arrangements were. Driver was always on time, car was comfortable, no confusion about pickups between destinations. Our coordinator Priya sorted everything before we even had to ask twice. No surprise charges at checkout, no last-minute scrambling. Kerala trips can get complicated with multiple transfers — this one just didn't feel that way.
