Itinerary
Arrival at Bhuj — Orientation and Evening Birding
Arrive at Bhuj (by flight or train). Meet your local naturalist and transfer to the hotel. Brief orientation about the next 6 nights focusing on birding etiquette and safety on mudflats. Evening birding at a nearby wetland or the Mandvi coast (depending on arrival time) to look for Indian Pond Heron, Black-tailed Godwit, and local shorebirds. Rest early to prepare for full field days.
Naliya/Mudflat Expedition — Gull-billed Tern and Redshank
Full-day expedition north-west of Bhuj to the coastal mudflats near Naliya and adjacent creeks. Walk with guides on designated safe routes across salt pans and mudflats to search for migratory and resident shorebirds — Greater Flamingo, Kentish Plover, Ruddy Turnstone, Marsh Sandpiper, and Gull-billed Tern. Learn identification tips and photography positioning. Return to Bhuj in the evening. Wear sun protection and waterproof footwear.
Great Rann Edge & Local Kutch Wetlands
Early morning visit to the Great Rann edge for wader concentrations at dawn. Survey seasonal marshes and inland wetlands near Bhuj for waterfowl and raptors — expect Eurasian Curlew, Black-winged Stilt, and Shaheen falcon sightings in the area. Afternoon cultural stop at Bhujodi or local craft villages to experience Kutchi textiles and a relaxing evening back in Bhuj.
Drive to Mandvi — Coastal Birding & Beach Time
Drive south to Mandvi (approx. 2–3 hours). En route, stop at creeks and estuaries for intertidal birding. Afternoon at Mandvi beach and nearby creeks for shorebirds, terns, and resident waders. Optional sunset boat trip in the creek to view mangrove-edge species and coastal life. Evening at leisure in Mandvi. Mandvi is family-friendly with beach access and optional boat rides.
Transfer to Jamnagar Region — Narara Marine National Park Visit
Drive to the Jamnagar / Narara Marine National Park area (approx. 4–5 hours). Afternoon visit to protected intertidal zones of Narara (Gulf of Kutch), famous for reef and mudflat birding. Search for reef-associated birds, coastal raptors, and large congregations of shorebirds at low tide. Evening briefing on next day's full-day marine and sanctuary exploration.
Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary & Nearby Mudflats
Full day at Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary and adjacent mudflats — a hotspot for migratory ducks, waders, and marsh species. Target species include Eurasian Wigeon, Harrier species, Pied Avocet, and large flocks of gulls and terns. Guided walk across boardwalks and observation hides, plus a late-afternoon visit to the Narara coastline to photograph the sunset over tidal flats.
Departure from Jamnagar — Final Checklist & Transfer
Morning birding for any missed specialties near Jamnagar. Return transfer to Jamnagar railway station or airport for onward travel. Program ends after drop-off. If you prefer, an extension to Dwarka or Ahmedabad can be arranged.
