Itinerary
Arrival and Transfer to the Cultural Triangle
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo). Meet and greet, then drive northeast toward the Cultural Triangle. Settle into your hotel in Habarana / Sigiriya. If time permits, enjoy a sunset visit or walk around the base of Sigiriya Rock and nearby villages.
Tip: Arrange an early arrival to maximize time at Sigiriya the next morning.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Dambulla Cave Temple
Climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress early to avoid the heat and crowds — admire frescoes, the mirror wall and panoramic views. After lunch, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple complex with its ornate Buddha statues and painted ceilings. Evening at leisure; optional village tour or traditional cooking demonstration.
Note: Wear comfortable shoes and carry water for the Sigiriya climb.
Polonnaruwa Ancient City and Minneriya Safari
Explore Polonnaruwa Ancient City — the medieval capital with well-preserved stupas, statues and royal palaces. After a guided tour, experience a wildlife safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park to see free-ranging elephants (seasonal). Transfer in the evening to Kandy and check into your hotel.
Tip: Polonnaruwa involves walking across uneven surfaces; wear sun protection.
Kandy: Temple of the Tooth & Cultural Evening
Morning visit to the royal Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — a significant pilgrimage site. Stroll through the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya (optional). In the evening, attend a cultural dance performance showcasing Kandyan traditions.
Note: Dress modestly when visiting temples; shoulders and knees should be covered.
Drive to the East Coast — Trincomalee & Nilaveli
After breakfast, drive northeast to the East Coast. Arrive in Trincomalee / Nilaveli and check into your beach hotel. Spend the afternoon relaxing on Nilaveli Beach or exploring the coastal town. Evening free to enjoy seafood and the beachside ambience.
Tip: The drive is scenic; carry a hat and light refreshments for the trip.
Koneswaram Temple, Pigeon Island & Water Activities
Visit the cliff-top Koneswaram Temple, an important Hindu pilgrimage site with sea views. Take a boat to Pigeon Island for snorkeling — encounter colorful reef fish and coral gardens. Afternoon at leisure for kayaking, diving or beach relaxation.
Important: Marine activities are seasonal; book early for Pigeon Island permits.
Beach Day or Optional Excursions
Enjoy a full day of beach time: sunbathe, swim, or join optional excursions such as whale/dolphin watching (seasonal), reef dives, or a local fishing experience. Alternatively, explore nearby cultural sites or take a village walk to experience coastal life.
Tip: For whale watching, the best months are April–October; confirm seasonal schedules in advance.
Return to Colombo & Departure
After a relaxed morning, drive back to Colombo. Time permitting, enjoy a short city tour: Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square, or shopping in Pettah Market. Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for your onward flight.
Note: Plan onward flights in the evening or the next day to avoid tight connections.
